Martha L. “Marty” Carrier, age 80, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023 in her daughter Marsha’s home with her immediate members of her family at her bedside. She fought hard but the cancer overtook her.
Marty was born to the late James and Olive Edington in Port Huron on December 4, 1942. She married Raymond C. “Chuck” Carrier on May 25, 1963 at the First Methodist Church on Lapeer Avenue in Port Huron. During the first year of their marriage, they resided in Big Spring, Texas while her husband was stationed at the Webb Airforce Base. Upon completion of his 4 years of active service the couple moved back home to enjoy the St. Clair River and continue their lives together.
In the early years of their marriage Marty worked as a classroom aid at Indian Woods Elementary School. Once her youngest daughter entered high school, Marty began working at the J.C. Penney store in downtown Port Huron. She later followed them during their relocation to the Birchwood Mall. Marty received the “James Cash Penney Award” after her manager heard of her involvement with the “Poppy” program and the “Flags for First Graders” Program. These are national programs that are of major importance to the Military Veterans Organization, also known as the 40et8. Marty was honored with this award three different times, in the years 1993, 1996, and 2002 with a statement that demands integrity, a “renewal of patriotism, and a desire the serve the community”. She retired from J.C. Penney’s with the “Gold Card”. During her time of employment there she made lifelong friendships with many of her co-workers. The group would often get together to catch up and eat lunch. Marty’s family would like to give a special thank you to her friend Judy for her efforts in arranging these lunches.
Marty enjoyed her involvement with the Military Veterans Organization. She participated in various parades by way of the auxiliaries she was affiliated with, always honoring our country’s flag.
Marty enjoyed traveling with many of her good friends including Barb, Olive, Denice, Betty, and Mary Alice. She joined the Ladies Auxiliary Post #796 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars as a coat and hat checker in 1959 at just 16 years of age. Marty was also a proud member of the Charles A. Hammond American Legion, Post #8 Ladies Aux. She had previously acted as the director of the bingo program and enjoyed participating in many events and special dinners. Another program Marty was associated with was the LaFemmes of the 40et8, she was so involved in fact that she was elected LaPresedant of the St. Clair County Voiture #120 and eventually worked her way up to the title of Grand LaPresedant of Grand De Michigan. This title gave Marty the unique opportunity to travel to many places including Anchorage, Alaska, Mexico, Niagara Falls, New York, and Niagara Falls, Ontario. During one of her trips to Niagara Falls Marty was allowed to change the color of the falls which she turned to blue.
