In 1963 Fred and I worked the afternoon shift at Mueller Brass in Marysville. We both had moved up the ladder a little bit and had bought brand new cars, his being a hot little Corvair Monza and mine being a Chevy II Nova convertible. We were heading north towards Port Huron when Fred kinda started nudging back and forth trying to edge me into a race. I don't think either of us had 500 miles on the cars yet. I hit the gas and we were well on our way side by side when in the rear-view mirror appeared a gumball machine with a Marysville Barney Phife sitting under it. I slowed to the speed limit but Fred decided to give it the gas. Barney passed me as if I was sitting still and went for Fred. I am not sure to this day if Fred got caught and paid a fine or if succeeded in his escape and evasion but he said he never got caught. We often would have a good laugh when reminded. I'll always remember his sense of humor and friendly smile. A gentle giant for sure.
