DAVID RICHARD SOMMERVILLE, 80, longtime Lapeer resident, formerly of Port Huron, died Monday, July 29, 2024. Dave was born September 19,1943 in Flint, to Richard and Letty (Pilon) Sommerville.
In 1973, Dave purchased the local Lapeer radio stations, beginning his over 50-year journey as a radio announcer and community supporter. After owning and operating the Lapeer stations for almost 20 years and selling them in 1990, he continued his true passion for radio announcing as a host for Lapeer’s “Community Chat” and on local WMPC radio. Dave loved meeting people and supporting organizations in the Lapeer area. He was an active member of the Lapeer Rotary Club, serving as president twice and regularly handing out “fines” at meetings with a quick wit and sense of humor.
Dave married Nancy Hickok on July 2, 1988, and together they have been involved in local charities including Lapeer Family Literacy Center and Courthouse Restoration Fundraising. He served on the Board of Directors for McLaren Lapeer Region for 21 years, starting when it was Lapeer General Hospital, then Lapeer Regional Medical Center and finally McLaren Lapeer.
Above all, Dave appreciated and loved his family, saying his “whole life revolved around his grandkids, children and wife.” Dave was truly a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother.
Dave is survived by his wife, Nancy Sommerville of Lapeer; daughter, Lorie (George) Karnegis of Oxford; step-son, Christopher (Holly) Ochodnicky of Flint; grandchildren, Natalie Karnegis of Sacramento, CA, Nicole Karnegis of Grand Rapids, Ezekiel Ochodnicky of Troy, Skye Ochodnicky of Flint, Eumorfia Ochodnicky of Flint and Gwendolyn Ochodnicky of Flint; brothers, John Sommerville of East China, MI, Tom Sommerville of Florida, Jeff (Pam) Sommerville of North Street, MI and Jim (Debbie) Sommerville of Port Huron; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Sommerville; and his parents.
